Choosing a sofa for a smaller living room

In a compact living room the sofa is the biggest decision. Get the size and shape right first, then the fabric and colour.

Pick the size

  • Loveseats and 2-seaters suit small rooms, apartments and as a second sofa.
  • 3-seaters are the everyday family size if the wall is long enough.
  • Corner sofas seat the most people for their footprint and make use of a corner, but check which side the corner goes and whether it can be swapped.

Mark the sofa's width and depth on the floor with masking tape and live with it for a day: it shows you the walkways and whether doors and radiators are blocked.

Make it feel lighter

  • A sofa on visible legs shows more floor, which makes a room feel bigger.
  • Slim arms give you more seat for the same width.
  • A footstool can be extra seating, a coffee table and storage.

Fabrics

Velvet is soft and rich; bouclé is textured and on trend; chenille is soft and hard-wearing in feel; flat-weave fabrics are easy-going. The upholstery fabric guide covers how each one behaves. Solace+Co is our own sofa brand.

Common questions

What size sofa is best for a small living room?

A loveseat or 2-seater usually suits a small room best. Mark the sofa size on the floor with tape first to check walkways and that doors and radiators stay clear.

Is a corner sofa good for a small room?

It can be, because a corner sofa seats more people for its footprint and uses an otherwise empty corner. Check the dimensions of both sides and which way the corner goes.
