It depends on what you want the mirror to do. A large mirror, particularly a full-length one, is the most practical choice for a bedroom as it lets you see yourself head to toe before leaving the house. If it’s sitting above a dressing table or chest of drawers, something smaller works better. As a general rule, aim for a mirror that sits at roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs above. That tends to look balanced, without dominating the wall.
The main difference is flexibility. A wall mirror is fixed in place, takes up no floor space, and can be positioned at exactly the right height, making it a good choice if you don’t plan on moving it. A freestanding mirror sits on a stand or base and can be moved around as the room changes, which is why full-length freestanding mirrors are so popular in bedrooms. If you can't hang anything on your walls, a freestanding mirror is the obvious solution.
A round mirror works well in bedrooms because its curved shape softens a room that might otherwise feel boxy or angular, and it is often placed above a chest of drawers. Round mirrors also read as decorative pieces as much as functional ones, which is worth considering if you want the mirror to add something to the room beyond the practical.
Opposite or adjacent to a window is ideal, as the mirror reflects natural light and distributes it throughout the room. Above a chest of drawers or a dressing table is usually the most practical spot, anchoring the wall and giving you a natural place to get ready each morning.
Yes, and it's one of the more effective ways to do it without redecorating. A large mirror reflects the room on itself, creating the impression of more space and drawing in more light. Placement matters, though. Position it to reflect a window or the longest part of the room, and it will work harder. A full-length wall mirror leaned against the wall rather than hung is also a popular option in smaller rooms, as it adds height and keeps the space feeling open.
Always check the mirror's weight before hanging it. Mirrors over 5kg need proper wall fixings rather than standard picture hooks. On solid brick or block walls, use wall plugs rated for the mirror's weight. On plasterboard, use specialist anchors rated for at least twice the weight of the mirror, and find the studs where possible for extra security. When in doubt, get a second person involved, particularly with a large mirror, as they can be awkward to position alone.
Not always, but a mirror pairs well with most of our bedroom furniture sets. If you're furnishing a bedroom from scratch, it's worth choosing a mirror that matches the finish of your other pieces. Our dressing tables, wardrobes, and bedside tables are available in a range of finishes, so finding something that coordinates is straightforward.
