Mattresses for kids' beds & bunk beds
A child's mattress needs to fit the bed exactly, and on a bunk bed or high sleeper it must not be too thick. Here's how to get the size, depth and feel right.
Rule one: the maximum thickness on raised beds
Every bunk bed and high bed made to EN 747 must be permanently marked with the maximum mattress thickness it can safely take, as a line on the frame, a label or in the instructions. That limit keeps the top of the safety rail high enough above the mattress that a child can't roll over it.
Don't swap in a deep sprung mattress from another bed. Measure the depth of any mattress you plan to use on a raised bed and compare it with the marking. The depth is listed on each mattress's product page.
The mattress quiz can filter children's mattresses by the maximum depth marked on your bed.
Sizes for children's beds
| Size | Mattress (cm) | Used on |
|---|---|---|
| Cot bed | 140 × 70 (commonly) | Cot beds and many toddler beds |
| Shorty | Varies: check the bed | Shorty beds and shorty bunks for smaller rooms |
| Small single (2ft6) | 75 × 190 | Some bunks, cabin beds and narrow rooms |
| Single (3ft) | 90 × 190 | Most kids' beds, bunks, cabin beds and high sleepers |
| Small double (4ft) | 120 × 190 | Teen beds and the lower bed of some bunks |
The mattress should match the bed's stated size; a mattress that's too small leaves gaps at the sides or ends where small arms and legs can slip. For more on sizes, see bed sizes in Ireland.

Foam, open coil or pocket sprung?
- Foam mattresses are light, often slim, and easy to lift when you change the sheets on a top bunk, which is why they're a common choice for raised beds.
- Open coil mattresses use one interconnected spring unit and are usually the budget sprung option.
- Pocket sprung mattresses have individually wrapped springs that move independently. They're generally deeper, so check the depth limit on a bunk.
Most children are comfortable on a medium to medium-firm mattress. Our firmness guide explains the ratings.
Keeping it fresh
- A waterproof mattress protector is worth it for younger children.
- Turn or rotate the mattress as its care label says.
- Air the room and the bed regularly; the EN 747 instructions for raised beds also recommend good ventilation to keep humidity and mould down.
Common questions
How thick should a bunk bed mattress be?
For the top bunk, no thicker than the maximum mattress thickness marked on the bed. EN 747 requires the marking so the safety rail stays high enough above the mattress.
What size mattress does a kids single bed take?
Most take a UK/Irish single, 90 x 190 cm. Some take a small single (75 x 190 cm) or a shorty size, so check the bed product page before ordering.
Is a continental single the same as a single?
No. A continental (EU) single is usually 90 x 200 cm, 10 cm longer than a UK/Irish single at 90 x 190 cm. Use the size the bed is made for.
