Toddler beds & Montessori floor beds
The first "big bed" is a milestone for toddlers and parents alike. Here's how toddler beds and Montessori-style floor beds compare, and how to make the room safe for a child who can now get out of bed on their own.
When to move out of the cot
There's no set age. Common signs are climbing out of the cot, or needing the cot for a new baby. If your child sleeps well in a cot bed, you can usually convert it to a toddler bed rather than buy a new one.
Toddler bed or floor bed?
| Toddler bed | Montessori floor bed | |
|---|---|---|
| Height | Low, slightly raised | At or very near floor level |
| Mattress | Most take a cot bed mattress (commonly 140 × 70 cm) | Varies: often a cot bed size or a single (90 × 190 cm) |
| Sides | Usually small guard rails | Often a house-shaped frame; some have low rails |
| Lasts | Until a single bed is needed | Single-size floor beds can last for years |
Always check the mattress size and any age guidance on the product page.

What makes a bed "Montessori"?
The idea comes from the Montessori approach to independence: a bed low enough for a child to get into and out of without help. In practice that means a floor-level bed, often with a house-style frame that can take a canopy or fairy lights. Because the child can get up on their own, the whole room needs to be safe to explore.

Making the room toddler-safe
- Secure chests of drawers, wardrobes and shelves to the wall. The CCPC's furniture safety advice explains how.
- Keep blind and curtain cords out of reach.
- Socket covers and a stair gate at the top of the stairs if the bedroom door will be open.
- Never hang anything with a cord or string from the bed frame.

Common questions
What size mattress does a toddler bed take?
Most toddler beds take a cot bed size mattress, commonly 140 x 70 cm. Some floor beds take a single (90 x 190 cm). Check the size on the product page.
Is a Montessori floor bed safe?
A floor bed is low, so falls are short, but because a toddler can get out of bed on their own, the room needs to be safe: furniture secured to the wall, cords out of reach and socket covers fitted.
