Looking after your mattress
A little care keeps a mattress comfortable, hygienic and supportive for longer. Always follow the care label on your mattress first; these are the general basics.
When it's new
- Remove all packaging and let it air in a ventilated room.
- Rolled mattresses need time to fully expand: follow the instructions on the packaging before sleeping on it.
- Expect a short settling-in period, for you and the mattress.
Routine care
- Rotate or turn as the care label says. Many modern mattresses are one-sided and only need rotating head to foot.
- Use a protector to guard against spills and sweat; most can be machine-washed.
- Air the bed: pull the covers back for a while in the morning before you make it.
- Vacuum the surface occasionally with an upholstery attachment.
- Use a suitable base: a bed with solid or slatted support as the mattress maker recommends.
Spills and stains
Blot (don't rub) with a clean cloth, use as little water as possible, and let it dry completely before you remake the bed. Don't soak a mattress.
Body impressions: what's normal
Natural fillings and comfort layers settle into the shape of the sleeper over time, leaving shallow body impressions. This is normal. Our warranty terms for Ireland treat natural settlement of up to 2.5 cm as normal, not a fault. Rotating the mattress regularly helps it settle evenly.
Signs it may be time for a new mattress
- You wake up stiff or aching, and feel better after sleeping elsewhere.
- Deep dips or lumps, or springs you can feel.
- You and your partner roll together.
- It creaks or squeaks noticeably.
