What age are bunk beds for?
As a general rule, little ones over the age of four should be able to safely sleep on the bottom bunk. Our range of bunk beds is very varied, meaning we have an option for children of any age - from toddler-friendly bunk bed options for the youngest family members to more advanced designs as they grow. We still recommend that toddlers be supervised, particularly if they are very active!
The right age for children to use the higher bunks on a bunk bed depends on their stage of development, but we do recommend that they are at least six years old. Before letting them sleep higher, your child should be able to confidently climb up and down the stairs or ladder independently and understand basic instructions. The right age for bunk beds, in relation to this, depends on your child's coordination and maturity. Trust your instincts to determine if your little one is ready.
Bunk bed sizes to choose from
Knowing the size of different bunk beds can help determine which is right for your child's room. Single bunk beds accommodate two standard single mattresses, a great option for smaller shared bedrooms.
A double bunk bed usually features a single bed on top with a double bed beneath it, offering extra space for an older child or providing more storage space for your little rascal's toys and games. Triple bunk beds stack three vertically, providing an excellent space-saving solution for sleepovers or larger families.
Here are some age and size guidelines to help you choose what’s best and what’s safe for your little one:

| Shorty Bunk Bed | 30" x 69” (75 x 175 cm) | 4+ years |

The different types of bunk beds
We have an excellent range of bunk beds, thoughtfully designed for toddlers, kids, and teens - perfect for shared bedrooms, sleepovers, or even as a guest bed. They’re lightweight but sturdy, and ultra-easy to assemble yourself. From compact singles to spacious double bunk beds, explore our collection featuring:
- Single bunk beds: These classic bunk beds for kids are ideal for siblings sharing a room or hosting sleepovers. Perfect for narrow rooms and toddlers.
- Low bunk beds: Designed with safety in mind, our low bunk beds for kids and toddlers sit closer to the ground, making them perfect for younger children. These low rise bunk beds are easier to climb and provide peace of mind for parents whilst still maximising bedroom space.
- Double bunk beds: Give your little ones enough room to grow. With a single bed on top and a double bed underneath, a double bunk bed is fantastic for families with an older child who needs extra sleeping room, or for a child who just needs additional storage space.
- Triple bunk beds: These bunk beds offer a cosy night's sleep for three children by stacking three sleeping areas vertically to give plenty of room for your growing family.
- Bunk beds with storage: These cleverly designed bunk beds incorporate drawers, shelves, and even wardrobes to help keep your little ones' room neat and tidy using built-in storage.
- Staircase bunk beds: These kids' bunk beds feature sturdy steps to give your little ones an extra hand climbing to the top bunk.
- L-shaped bunk beds: This unique configuration, where the bottom bed is perpendicular to the top bunk, helps maximise space in shared sibling bedrooms.
- Mid-sleeper beds: A mid-sleeper bed elevates a single bed to create a fantastic area for them to study or play underneath a lofted bunk.
- High-sleeper beds: High-sleeper beds provide substantial space beneath the bedframe, giving teens even more room to study, read, or play video games.
How safe are kids' bunk beds?
Your little one's safety is our top priority. That’s why all of our bunk beds are built to meet UK safety standards EN-747. These rigorous safety standards focus on construction, dimensions, and materials to ensure that each design is safe for your little sleeper. Many of our bunk beds for kids feature high side rails on the top bunk and sturdy ladders, giving you extra peace of mind. We also recommend that only children over six years old use the top bunk, which aligns with safety guidelines.

Bunk bed materials
Our kids' bunk beds are crafted with durable materials such as metal, solid wood, and high-density particleboard to keep your child safe. We only use the finest materials:
- Metal bunk beds: Durable and sleek, metal bunk beds are sturdy and easy to maintain.
- Wooden bunk beds: These are incredibly popular for their classic, warm feel and sturdiness. Wooden bunk beds complement almost any bedroom decor.
- Particleboard: Lightweight and cost-effective, particleboard offers a smooth finish and is usually used with veneers. Due to its versatility, it is frequently used in designs to incorporate extensive storage solutions.
Bunk bed colours and styling
Bunk beds for kids aren't just practical storage solutions - they can become the centrepiece of their bedrooms with our versatile colour and styling options. When it comes to colour, you can choose from grey bunk beds, white bunk beds, and a variety of more neutral tones that will grow with your child’s evolving bedroom style. You could also pick bold hues, such as a chic black or a vibrant blue, to give your child's room more personality.
Remember, you can incorporate the bunk bed frame into a broader theme. Does your little one want to sleep in a pirate ship or a treehouse? Or would they prefer a cosy reading nook? Adding interior design elements, like fairy lights, themed bedding, or even a canopy, can truly transform the space. Our kids' bunk beds can be an excellent canvas for creating the perfect escape for your little adventurer!
What mattress is best for a bunk bed?
Choosing the right bunk bed mattress is essential for your child's comfort and safety. Thinner mattresses are generally recommended for the top bunk to ensure the safety rails remain effective and prevent falls. The right bunk bed mattress depends on the size and shape of the bed frame.
All our bunk beds have an optional mattress addition for the top and bottom bunks. After deciding on your purchase, choose a mattress type and size from the drop-down menu. We recommend a memory foam mattress or a pocket sprung mattress for kids' bunk beds. To learn more, please visit our kids' mattresses page or read our guide on how to choose a mattress.
