Cot Bed FAQs
What’s the difference between a cot, a crib and a cot bed?
A crib is typically smaller and used for the first few months, a cot is a larger, fixed-side bed for a baby, and a cot bed (sometimes called a cot crib bed) converts from a cot into a toddler bed as your child grows, giving you several years of use from one piece of furniture.
What size is a cot bed?
In the UK, a standard cot bed takes a mattress measuring 140 x 70 cm, while a standard cot takes a smaller 120 x 60 cm mattress. The outer frame dimensions vary between designs, so it’s worth checking the product measurements against the space in your nursery.
Are all cot bed mattresses the same size?
Not always. Most cot beds use a 140 x 70 cm mattress, but sizes can differ slightly between manufacturers. The mattress should fit snugly, with a gap of no more than 4 cm between the mattress and the sides or ends of the cot bed, so choosing a matching mattress is the simplest way to get the right fit.
When should you move from a cot to a bed?
Most children move from a cot to a bed between 18 months and 3 years old. Signs your child is ready include trying to climb out, outgrowing the cot, or needing to use the toilet during the night. With a cot bed, the transition is easier because you simply convert it into a toddler bed, keeping the same familiar sleep space.
How long does a cot bed last?
A cot bed can typically be used from birth until your child is around 4 or 5 years old. It starts as a cot, and once the sides are removed, it becomes a toddler bed that lasts until your child is ready for a single bed.
What size duvet do you need for a cot bed?
A cot bed duvet usually measures 120 x 150 cm. Duvets and pillows aren’t recommended for babies under 12 months, so for younger babies, a fitted sheet with a baby sleeping bag or cellular blanket is the safer choice.
