What is a house bed for kids?

A children's house bed is a bed frame designed to look like a miniature house, with a pitched roofline and decorative details that a standard bed frame can't match. Some designs keep it simple, a clean gabled roof over a solid frame that lets the shape do the talking. Others go much further, with carved panelling, built-in storage, slides, or bunk configurations that make the bed the undisputed focal point of the room. Either way, a bed that children are this excited about has a way of making bedtime considerably less of a negotiation.

What ages are kids' house beds suitable for?

House beds cover a wider age range than most people expect. Toddler designs start around 18 months, with lower seating, simpler rooflines, and a shorty-sized mattress. At the other end, full single designs with mid-sleeper height, storage, and desk space work comfortably up to around 10 or 11. A well-chosen house bed is one of those purchases children grow into rather than through.

Are treehouse bunk beds a good choice for shared bedrooms?

For two children sharing a room, a treehouse bunk bed solves several problems at once. Both children get their own distinct sleeping space, the floor stays clear, and it looks far more considered than a standard bunk frame. It also has the not-insignificant advantage of making bedtime exciting enough that the usual resistance to going up at the same time tends to evaporate. Browse our full range of bunk beds to compare styles and configurations.

Do house beds come with storage?

Many do. Drawers in the base, shelving in the side panels, and under-platform cabinet space are all common depending on the design, so check the product description before you buy. If you need more than the bed provides, our kids' chest of drawers and kids' wardrobes are worth a look alongside.

What size mattress do I need for a house bed?

Most children's house beds take a standard single at 90 x 190cm, but toddler and shorty designs use a smaller size, typically 70 x 140cm or 90 x 160cm. The roofline frame sits close to the mattress edges, so getting the size right matters more here than with a standard open frame. Always check the size in the product listing before ordering, and browse our kids' mattresses if you need one to pair with it.

Are children's house beds safe?

All the house beds in our range meet current UK safety standards for children's furniture. Follow the assembly instructions carefully and make sure every fixing is properly tightened before the bed gets its first use, as children rarely give new furniture a gentle introduction. For bunk or mid-sleeper designs, check that the safety rails meet the required height and always confirm the weight limit before use, as elevated sleeping areas are only built to safely hold so much, however convincing the argument to pile on might be.

Can I get an enchanted or themed house bed?

Plenty of designs go well beyond a plain white roofline. Natural wood finishes with a genuine treehouse character, carved panelling, and colourways inspired by fairy-tale or woodland themes feature throughout the collection. Our enchanted house beds tend to be the ones children spot first and won't let go of, which at least makes the decision easy. Use the colour filter to narrow down your options, or browse our novelty beds for more themed options.
