A bed frame is the raised structure that supports your mattress, usually a slatted base with sides and, on most models, a headboard. Unlike a divan, a bed frame does not include the mattress, so you pick the two separately and get more say over the style, height and storage. If you would rather have a matching base and mattress in one, look at our divan beds instead.

What size bed frames are available?

We stock every main UK size, from single to super king. Single, 90 x 190cm, for children's rooms, teens and single sleepers. Small double, 120 x 190cm, for solo adults who want more room. Double, 135 x 190cm, the most popular size for couples. King size, 150 x 200cm, extra width and length for taller sleepers. Super king, 180 x 200cm, the roomiest standard size. For a full breakdown of every size, see our bed and mattress size guide.

What is the best material for a bed frame?

It comes down to the look you want and how much upkeep suits you. Wooden bed frames are strong and long-lasting, from oak and pine to painted finishes. Metal bed frames are lighter and airy, and often the best value. Fabric and upholstered beds, including velvet and boucle, add a soft, padded headboard. Leather bed frames give a sleek, wipe-clean finish. There is no single best material. Wood lasts and suits most rooms, metal keeps the price down, and upholstered frames feel warmer and softer.

Are sprung or solid slats better?

Most of our bed frames use a slatted base. Solid slats are flat and rigid and give firmer, even support, which suits pocket sprung and open coil mattresses. Sprung slats are gently curved and flex with your weight, adding a little give that pairs well with memory foam and hybrid mattresses. Both work with any mattress, so it comes down to how firm you like the feel. For even support, look for slats no more than about 7cm apart.

Do bed frames come with a mattress or headboard?

A bed frame does not include a mattress, so you can pair it with the comfort level you prefer from our mattress range. Most frames include a headboard, though a few are sold as a base only, which is always shown in the product description. If you want a base and mattress together, a divan set is the simpler choice.

Which bed frame is the strongest?

For the most support, a solid wooden frame or a sturdy metal frame with central legs and closely spaced slats will last the longest. If two people or a heavier mattress will use the bed, check the weight rating in the product details. Ottoman frames are strong too, with a reinforced gas-lift base built to take the mattress weight as it lifts.

How much does a bed frame cost?

Bed frames at bedkingdom start from under £100 for a simple metal or single frame and rise to £700 or more for a large upholstered or ottoman frame, with most sitting between £150 and £500. Size, material and storage are what move the price. If you find the same frame cheaper elsewhere, our price match guarantee will match it, and 0% APR finance lets you spread the cost. For current reductions, see our bed sale.

How long should a bed frame last?

A well-made bed frame lasts around 7 to 10 years, and a solid wooden frame can last far longer with care. Tighten the bolts every few months, avoid sitting on the edges, and keep the slats sitting flat and evenly spaced. A good frame often outlives several mattresses, so it is worth buying quality once.

How do I stop a bed frame from squeaking?

Most squeaks come from loose joints or slats rubbing. Tighten every bolt, add felt pads or a strip of cloth where wood or metal parts meet, and check the slats sit flat in their holders. If the squeak comes back, a bolt has usually worked loose again, so re-tighten every few months.

How do I assemble a bed frame?

Most bed frames are flat-packed and come with clear instructions and all the fixings. Lay out and check the parts first, build the main frame, then fit the slats or base before adding the headboard and mattress. Larger frames and ottoman beds are easier with two people, and most take under an hour.
